Day Trips from Krakow by Car and Public Transport, with a 3-Day Plan

Škoda Superb from the ANSCars fleet, side view

The classic day trips from Kraków are the Wieliczka Salt Mine (about 15 km), Ojców National Park (about 25 km), Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains (about 100-110 km) and the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial (about 65-75 km), which deserves a day of its own. Wieliczka, Zakopane and Oświęcim can be reached by train or bus; a car helps most for Ojców, Tatra trailheads and days with more than one stop.

The rule that works best is simple: one main trip per day, without rushing. For each place below we give the approximate distance from Kraków, how much time to allow and what to book in advance. Distances and driving times are our estimates; opening hours, fares and rules are set by each place and were checked on 24 October 2026 where we give a source. Check them again before you go.

One note before you start: hiring a car is not a tour package. A rental does not include a guide, entry tickets or parking reservations; you arrange those separately with each place.

Choose a day trip by time and interests

DestinationDistance from Kraków (estimate)Time to allowWhat to bookWithout a car
Wieliczka Salt Mineabout 15 kmhalf a day, with a 2-3 h visita ticket for a set time and languageeasy by train
Ojców National Park and Pieskowa Skałaabout 25 kmhalf a day to a full dayusually nothing; check seasonal opening timespossible, but takes more planning
Auschwitz-Birkenau memorialabout 65-75 kma full daya personal entry pass, online onlyby bus or train
Zakopane and the Tatrasabout 100-110 kma full day, or a night therethe Morskie Oko car park online, if you drive thereby bus or train to the town

With two days in Kraków, stay in the city and add one short trip. With three days, add one full-day trip. With four days or more, two trips fit without rushing. Places such as Warsaw, about 300 km away by road, are not a sensible return trip in one day: plan them with an overnight stay.

Which trips need advance booking? The Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial always does, because entry passes are online only. Wieliczka is best booked ahead for a particular time and language. For Morskie Oko, the parking ticket is bought online and tied to the car's registration number. Ojców usually needs no booking.

Wieliczka and nearby places

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is the easiest trip: about 15 km from the centre, reached by car or by train from Kraków Główny to the Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia stop. According to the mine, the Tourist Route is about 3.5 km long, has more than 800 steps, goes down to 135 m and takes 2-3 hours on average, including the Kraków Saltworks Museum. The temperature underground is 17-18°C, so bring a jumper. Individual tickets start from PLN 121 per person; buy them in the mine's official online shop and choose the time and language of your visit.

By car from Kraków, the A4 ring road towards the Kraków Wieliczka junction is free for cars. Near the main entrance there are paid car parks run by the mine and by other operators; check the price board before you drive in, because the rules and rates differ. Wieliczka is also the best choice for a rainy day, because the visit is entirely underground.

Shorter visits and public transport

Going independently to Wieliczka does not mean exploring the mine without a guide: the Tourist Route is guided by the mine, in the language and at the time on your ticket. What you organise yourself is the transport and arrival time. The train is the simplest option if Wieliczka is your only stop; a car makes sense if you go on somewhere else the same day or travel with children and a pushchair. An organised tour from Kraków adds transport and a fixed schedule but gives no different access to the mine, so compare what each option includes, not just the price.

Ojców and the Jura

Ojców, about 25 km north of Kraków, is Poland's smallest national park: a limestone valley with rock formations, caves and, nearby, Pieskowa Skała castle. It is part of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, known as the Polish Jura, a plateau of castles and rocks stretching north towards Częstochowa. It is a short nature trip that is most convenient by car, because public transport to the valley takes more planning.

Our pick-up point at ul. Opolska 12 is in the north of Kraków, on the way to Ojców. Half a day is enough for a walk in the valley and a look at the castle from outside. If you want to go inside the castle or the caves, check their seasonal opening times first, because in autumn and winter they are shorter and some places close for the season. Car parks near the main sights are usually paid; check the price on site.

Zakopane and Tatra access

Zakopane, at the foot of the Polish Tatras, needs a full day: about 2 hours by road each way without traffic, frequent congestion at weekends and, in November, short days with a ban on walking the national park trails between dusk and dawn. If you want to visit Morskie Oko, remember that the car park is bought online from the Tatra National Park, tied to the car's registration number, and that you cannot drive to the lake: from the car park the route continues on foot.

The details, with parking in the town, trailhead parking, bus and train options and a November plan, are in our guide Kraków to Zakopane by car, bus or train.

Visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau

The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim is a place of remembrance, not one more sightseeing stop. Plan it as the only programme of the day, without combining it with another visit.

Reserve the memorial visit separately

Entry passes are personal and can be booked online only, at visit.auschwitz.org. Entry to the grounds is free; visits with a museum guide-educator are paid. According to the museum, the standard guided tour lasts about three and a half hours, and in November the last entry is at 3:00 pm. The journey, the free museum car park and how the visit is organised are explained in our guide Kraków to Auschwitz-Birkenau by car and public transport.

A realistic three-day plan

An example that combines the city with day trips, without spending the holiday behind the wheel. You need the car only on days 2 and 3, or for 3 days if you want to travel with no deposit.

  1. Day 1, the city on foot: the Main Market Square, the Cloth Hall, St Mary's Basilica and the Royal Route up to Wawel Hill with the castle and the cathedral. In the afternoon, the Kazimierz district. No car needed: the centre is best on foot and by tram.
  2. Day 2, Wieliczka or Ojców: the salt mine in the morning, with a ticket for a set time, or the Ojców valley in good weather. Back in Kraków by mid-afternoon.
  3. Day 3, one longer trip: the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial or Zakopane, depending on your interests. Do not combine them on the same day.

If it rains: swap Ojców for Wieliczka and keep the outdoor walks for the first dry morning. In November it gets dark early, so do outdoor visits in the morning. 1 November (All Saints' Day) is a public holiday when cemeteries are very busy and traffic near them is heavy, and 11 November is Independence Day. Some places close or change their hours on these dates, so check each official website.

Can you plan three days with only one rental day? Yes: rent the car for the single day you need it, for example for Zakopane or Ojców, and use trains for Wieliczka. Bear in mind that on rentals of 1 or 2 days we block a standard deposit on your card (PLN 1,000 in a C automatic); the Protektor package, which removes it, starts at 3 days.

Costs, parking and choosing a car

A car is most useful on trip days, especially to Ojców, Zakopane or Oświęcim, and when several people travel together: you share the cost and leave when it suits you. In the city you do not need one.

The rental price includes 400 km per day, counted in total over the whole rental. As a reference, in our rentals from 2022-2024 a car typically covered about 150 km per day (median), but plan your own route: Kraków to Zakopane and back is over 200 km, and with a trip to a Tatra trailhead about 270 km. Poland has no vignette for cars; you pay only on a few concession motorway sections, such as the A4 between Kraków and Katowice, at the toll gate. Parking at each destination is paid separately. More about road rules and tolls is in our guide driving in Poland.

Example: 3 days in a C automatic (Toyota Corolla Hybrid or similar), with pick-up and return at ul. Opolska 12, costs PLN 495 for the rental and PLN 149.99 for Protektor, PLN 644.99 in total with no deposit and 1,200 km included. If you collect the car at the airport, add PLN 49.99 for the handover and another PLN 49.99 if you return it there.

  • B SUV (Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid or similar): for two people, easy to park in Wieliczka or Zakopane.
  • C automatic (Toyota Corolla Hybrid or similar): the standard choice for most day trips.
  • D (Škoda Superb or similar): families, more luggage or longer drives.

If you are flying in and only need to get to your hotel, our guide from Kraków Airport to the city centre compares the train, buses and taxis.

A car for your day trips. A class C automatic (Toyota Corolla Hybrid or similar) for most routes, a B SUV (Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid or similar) for two people, a class D (Škoda Superb or similar) with more luggage. Collection at the Orlen station next to Kraków Airport or at our pick-up point at ul. Opolska 12. No deposit with the Protektor package on rentals of 3 days or more. Book online in English.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Kraków?

It depends on your interests. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is the easiest, about 15 km away and good in any weather. Zakopane suits mountain lovers, Ojców a short nature walk. The Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial is a visit of a different kind and deserves a day of its own.

Which day trips work without hiring a car?

Wieliczka by train from Kraków Główny, Zakopane town by bus or train, and Oświęcim by bus or train. A car helps most for Ojców, for Tatra trailheads outside Zakopane and for days with more than one stop.

How many places can I realistically visit in one day?

One main place per day. Wieliczka can be combined with a relaxed afternoon in Kraków, but the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and Zakopane each take a full day, especially in November when it gets dark before 16:00.

Which trips need advance booking?

The Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial always does: entry passes are online only at visit.auschwitz.org. Wieliczka is best booked ahead for a set time and language. For Morskie Oko, the car park ticket is bought online and tied to the car's registration number.

Can I plan three days with only one rental day?

Yes. Rent the car only for the day you need it, for example Zakopane or Ojców, and use trains for Wieliczka. On a 1 or 2-day rental we block a standard deposit on your card; with 3 days or more you can remove it with the Protektor package.

What is a good day trip in bad weather?

The Wieliczka Salt Mine: the visit is entirely underground at 17-18°C. Keep outdoor plans such as Ojców or Tatra walks for the first dry morning, and check the Tatra National Park bulletin before any mountain trip.

Is the 400 km daily limit enough for day trips?

For the trips in this guide, yes: Kraków to Wieliczka and back is about 50 km, to Oświęcim and back about 130-150 km, and to a Tatra trailhead and back about 270 km. The limit is counted in total over the whole rental, and extra kilometres cost PLN 0.30 per km.

Krakow to Zakopane by Car, Bus or Train: Parking and Tatra Access

Zakopane is about 100-110 km (62-68 miles) south of Kraków, roughly 2 hours by car without traffic, longer on Friday and Sunday afternoons. A bus or train works well if you are only going to the town centre; a car helps if you want to reach Tatra trailheads such as Palenica Białczańska for Morskie Oko. In November the days are short, trails are closed from dusk to dawn and conditions higher up can already be wintry.
