Krakow to Zakopane by Car, Bus or Train: Parking and Tatra Access

Zakopane is about 100-110 km (62-68 miles) south of Kraków, roughly 2 hours by car without traffic, longer on Friday and Sunday afternoons. A bus or train works well if you are only going to the town centre; a car helps if you want to reach Tatra trailheads such as Palenica Białczańska for Morskie Oko. In November the days are short, trails are closed from dusk to dawn and conditions higher up can already be wintry.

Zakopane, at the foot of the Polish Tatra Mountains, is the most popular trip from Kraków after the Wieliczka Salt Mine and the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial. This guide compares the ways of getting there, explains parking in the town and at the trailheads, and shows what changes in November. Distances and driving times are our estimates; parking rates and trail rules come from the operators and were checked on 24 October 2026. Check them again before you travel.

Choose your transport from Krakow

There is no single best option: it depends on where in the Tatras you are going, how many of you there are and whether you stay overnight.

Car, bus and train

OptionJourney (estimate)Good forWatch out for
Carabout 2 h from Kraków to the centre of Zakopane without traffictrailheads outside the town, families, several stops in one daytraffic on the main road (zakopianka), paid parking, Morskie Oko parking booked by registration number

Trainaccording to the connectiontravellers who prefer to avoid the roadtimetable for your date; the journey can take longer than by road

Buses to Zakopane are run by several private operators, mostly from Kraków's main bus station next to Kraków Główny railway station. Trains run from Kraków Główny, operated by Koleje Małopolskie and PKP Intercity. Times and fares change with the timetable and the day of the week, so check them with the operator for your date; we do not quote them here.

A car is not automatically the cheapest option for one person, and it does not let you skip the traffic. It makes most sense when several people share it, when you want to reach a trailhead outside the town or when you combine Zakopane with other places over a few days.

Allow time for traffic

The road from Kraków runs south on the S7 expressway and then on national road 47, known as the zakopianka. Without traffic, the drive from northern Kraków to the centre of Zakopane takes about 2 hours. On Friday afternoons, at weekends and on long weekends, the last part of the route through the villages before Zakopane is often congested.

Centre of Zakopane to Palenica Białczańskaabout 20-25 kmabout 35-45 min
Kraków to Palenica and back in one dayabout 270 kmabout 5 h of driving

These are our estimates for a weekday morning. Before you set off, check roadworks on the GDDKiA road information map. There are no motorway tolls on this route. A full day from Kraków to Morskie Oko and back, about 270 km, is well within the 400 km per day included in our rental price.

Parking in Zakopane

In the centre of Zakopane, street parking is in the paid parking zone (Śródmiejska Strefa Płatnego Parkowania), split into sub-zones A, B and C for cars. According to the town, fees apply 7 days a week from 8:00 to 21:00. Without a resident's subscription, the first hour costs PLN 8 in sub-zone A, nearest Krupówki street, and PLN 6 in sub-zones B and C; the minimum fee for 30 minutes is PLN 5 in A and PLN 4 in B and C. You pay at a parking meter or in the Flowbird, SkyCash or Mobilet apps, entering the car's registration number and the sub-zone.

Outside the zone there are many private car parks with their own daily or hourly rates. Check the price board at the entrance before you drive in. If you stay overnight, ask about parking when you book your accommodation.

Parking for Tatra trails

Trailhead parking is separate from parking in the town. For Morskie Oko, the most popular lake in the Tatras, the Tatra National Park (TPN) runs one car park in two parts: Palenica Białczańska at the trail entrance and Łysa Polana, up to 1.5 km away. According to TPN:

  • tickets are sold online on the park's website, from PLN 36 to PLN 75 for a car depending on the season, availability and when you buy,
  • the ticket must show the car's correct registration number; tickets with a different number or without one are not accepted,
  • the number can be changed only by email to ebilety@tpn.pl, no later than 12:00 noon on the day before your visit,
  • at the entrance, tickets are sold only if spaces are free, only by card and at the highest price,
  • from 1 March to 30 November the car park is open from dawn to dusk.

You cannot drive to Morskie Oko itself. From Palenica the walk to the lake follows an asphalt road of roughly 9 km, which usually takes 2-2.5 hours each way. The parking ticket does not include the national park entry ticket, which is bought separately.

With a hire car, plan the parking ticket around your pick-up. You book a car class, not a specific car, so you learn the registration number only at the handover, and we cannot give it in advance. If you collect the car at least a day before your trip, buy the TPN ticket online straight after pick-up, using the number in the registration document. If you collect it on the morning of the trip, buy the ticket online after pick-up, bearing in mind that the price can be higher when you buy on the day, or try on site if spaces are free. Other valleys, such as Kościeliska or Chochołowska, have mostly private car parks with prices shown at the entrance.

One day or an overnight stay

A day trip from Kraków is realistic if you keep it simple: the town centre and a short walk, or one trail with an early start. With about 4-5 hours of driving on a busy day, a long mountain hike plus the town is too much for one November day.

An overnight stay gives you an early start at the trailhead without driving from Kraków before dawn, and a relaxed return on the second day. If you have three or four days in Kraków, one of them in Zakopane is a good balance; other trips that fit around it are in our guide to visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau from Kraków.

An example of a day trip by car in November:

  1. leave Kraków at about 7:00, so you are at the trailhead or in Zakopane before the morning traffic builds up,
  2. a walk of 3-4 hours, back at the car park well before dusk,
  3. a late lunch in Zakopane,
  4. leave for Kraków by about 15:30-16:00, before the evening traffic, arriving in the evening.

November and winter conditions

November in the Tatras is a transition month. Days are short and it gets dark before 16:00. TPN forbids walking on all trails from dusk to dawn between 1 March and 30 November. In its bulletin of 24 October 2026, the park described difficult conditions in the higher parts of the Tatras: a thin layer of fresh snow, slippery and icy paths, and mud lower down. In such conditions going higher requires winter mountain experience and equipment such as crampons, an ice axe and a helmet. TPN also reported that the Kasprowy Wierch cable car has a technical break from 19 October to 6 November 2026.

Conditions change from day to day, so read the current TPN bulletin the evening before your trip, together with the avalanche bulletin once winter starts.

  • start early and plan to be back at the car before dusk,
  • fill up in Kraków or on the way, before the traffic,
  • take a warm layer, a head torch, a charged phone and a power bank,
  • check the weather for the road too: snow makes the zakopianka and mountain roads much slower.

Our cars run on all-season tyres. That does not replace careful driving, and it does not mean every mountain road will be passable in heavy snow. More on road rules, tolls and driving in Poland is in our guide driving in Poland.

Choosing a hire car

Choose the car by the number of people and the amount of luggage. None of our classes comes with a guarantee of four-wheel drive, and we confirm the specific car when you book.

  • C automatic (Toyota Corolla Hybrid or similar): the standard choice for a typical trip; the automatic gearbox makes the stop-and-go traffic on the zakopianka easier.
  • B SUV (Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid or similar): for two people, easy to park in the busy centre.
  • D (Škoda Superb or similar): for a family with more luggage or a stay of several days.

Example: a C automatic for 3 days with pick-up and return at ul. Opolska 12 costs PLN 495, plus PLN 149.99 for the Protektor package, PLN 644.99 in total with no deposit and 1,200 km included. With collection and return at Kraków Airport you add PLN 49.99 for each. Fuel, parking and the TPN ticket are separate. All classes are on the fleet page and all rates in the price list.

A car for the Tatras. For a typical Kraków-Zakopane trip we recommend a class C automatic (Toyota Corolla Hybrid or similar), for two people a B SUV (Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid or similar), and with more luggage a class D (Škoda Superb or similar). Collection at the Orlen station next to Kraków Airport or at our pick-up point at ul. Opolska 12. No deposit with the Protektor package on rentals of 3 days or more. Book online in English, and remember that you get the registration number for the TPN parking ticket at the handover.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zakopane realistic as a day trip from Kraków?

Yes, if you keep the plan simple. Allow about 2 hours each way by car without traffic, more at weekends. In November, with dusk before 16:00, choose either the town centre with a short walk or one trail with an early start, not both.

Should I take a bus, a train or a hire car?

For one or two people going to the town centre, a bus or train is usually simpler. A car helps when several people share it, when you want to reach trailheads such as Palenica Białczańska, or when you combine Zakopane with other trips over a few days. Check bus and train times with the operators.

Where can I park in the centre of Zakopane?

In the town's paid parking zone, 7 days a week from 8:00 to 21:00: the first hour costs PLN 8 in sub-zone A and PLN 6 in sub-zones B and C, paid at a meter or in the Flowbird, SkyCash or Mobilet apps. There are also private car parks with their own rates.

Does parking for Morskie Oko need advance booking?

TPN sells tickets online, PLN 36-75 for a car, tied to the registration number. At the entrance tickets are sold only if spaces are free, by card and at the highest price. With a hire car, buy the ticket after pick-up, when you know the number; changes are possible by email until 12:00 the day before.

Can I drive to Morskie Oko?

No. Private cars can go only as far as the TPN car park at Palenica Białczańska or Łysa Polana. From Palenica you walk roughly 9 km on an asphalt road, usually 2-2.5 hours each way.

What changes in November and winter?

Days are short, and until 30 November TPN forbids walking on trails from dusk to dawn. Higher up there can be snow and ice requiring crampons and winter experience. Read the TPN bulletin the evening before, and allow extra time on the road if snow is forecast.

Are there tolls between Kraków and Zakopane?

No. The route via the S7 and national road 47 has no motorway tolls. Poland has no vignette for cars; you pay only on a few concession motorway sections elsewhere, such as the A4 between Kraków and Katowice.

Kraków Airport to the City Centre: Train, Bus, Taxi or Car

The fastest way from Kraków Airport (Balice) to the city centre is the Koleje Małopolskie train: the ride to Kraków Główny station takes about 18-20 minutes and a ticket costs PLN 20. Bus 300 or night bus 902 is cheaper but slower, a taxi is more convenient (PLN 109-129 to the Old Town), and if you are staying longer you can collect a rental car straight away.
